Want to Join the Military? The United States military is brimming with opportunities for those that want to serve their country, and those opportunities offer a host of benefits too. How does one decide what branch of the military to join and what is the primary function of each branch?

Here is a list of each military branch. Each branch has its own distinct mission. See which one you may want to join.

Army and Army Reserve: The Army generally takes over a land area, secures it, and then forces order within it before it leaves. It also guards U.S. installations and properties throughout the world.

Army National Guard: The Army National Guard is a military branch with an exclusive group of soldiers who dedicate a share of their time to serving their nation. Each state has its own Guard.

If you have a vision of securing peace, doing land-based operations, and being part of a huge team, then the Army wants you.

Air Force and Air Force Reserve: This military branch supplies the air and space power. The primary mission of the USAF is to fly planes, helicopters, and satellites.

Air National Guard: The Air National Guard is a separate reserve section of the United States Air Force.

The Air Force and Air National Guard focus on flying. If you like flying or working with flight systems & technology, then the Air Force branch is for you.

Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve: The Coast Guard is a military branch that primarily deals with domestic waterways. This branch is responsible for rescues, law enforcement, and drug prevention.

The Coast guard primarily focuses on law enforcement rather than large scale military operations. If you like the thought of working with law enforcement, the Coast Guard needs you.

Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve: The Marine Corps are known as the rapid-reaction force. This military branch fights by sea and land, and usually are the first "boots on the ground." Marines are considered the world's most fierce warriors.
