More commonly referred to as the Tuareg Sloughi, this African sight hound has been around since antiquity. Serving its human masters as a companion, guard, and hunting partner, the Azawakh is a versatile breed. Possessing a natural guarding instinct, the Tuareg can be found sleeping on low straw roofs in Mali villages. They seem nonchalant, akin to sunbathing cats, until perceived danger approaches. Their placid countenance turns aggressive, and they transform into a different dog. Many owners have seen the Tuareg immediately form a pack and drive the danger away.
Built to withstand hot climates, the Azawakh is adorned with a short, but surprisingly soft coat. This canine possess lean legs, and a deep chest allowing it to reach speeds of up to 40 mph. Coat color does not vary as the majority of dogs are various shades of brown with occasional red undertones. The Tuareg is taller than it is long, and has a high waist.
One look at this dog, and it apparent this breed was born to run. Although they don't possess the speed of a Greyhound, the Tuareg is a fast sprinter who also excels in endurance. This athlete can adapt to urban living, but requires space to roam.
The Tuareg Sloughi makes an excellent guard dog, and has an alert personality. At time this breed displays an almost feline independence, which is belied by a fierce loyalty to its owner. Azawakhs tend to favor one or two people. Although aloof, these dogs are gentle and affectionate with those they consider a part of the family unit. The only time they show aggression, is when they view something as a perceived threat.
This breed suffers from little to no health problems. Although a larger breed, issues such as hip dysplasia are rare. The Azawakh is prone to obesity if not vigorously exercised, so care should be taken with their diets. Early socialization with animals and humans is highly recommended. An untrained Tuareg becomes nervous easily so by introducing them to various situations at an early age, many problems can be averted later on. This breed is not for first time dog owners.
