Is someone you know spending this Christmas as a brand new Mother? Or do you know someone who will be celebrating the new year with a new arrival to the family? Not sure what to get for your expecting friend or family member? Here are a few gift ideas for this holiday season that are sure to brighten a new or expecting mothers Christmas.

Crochet a baby blanket or clothes -

This gift is not only practical, it is also a personal gift to the new mother. I have already completed 2 blankets for two ladies who will be celebrating the births of their babies in 2008. Crocheting is very simple to learn if you want to use the hooks, there are many books with patterns and how-to instructions included. There are also kits for those who are very new to crocheting, like I was. You can use a loom to help with any baby blanket or clothing project you decide to undertake. I suggest checking out Jo-Ann's Fabric or Michael's for any yarn or crocheting needs. Cost: One blanket could be done for $10 or less depending on where you shop and the amount of materials you want to use.

Store gift cards -

This is also a a very useful gift for new mothers or mothers-to-be, especially if you don't know what they would want for their baby. I find that places that specialize in baby clothes like Old Navy, Baby Gap and Babies R Us have a large selection of not only new clothes but nice looking clothes at discounted prices. Discounted prices help to stretch the gift card value far.

LOL, I guess the blankets could get old after a while for some. My friends were really into them, probably because it is their first kid.

I'm with Carol - I like the idea of doing something for the mom. I'm expecting my third and I just want to say please, for the love of God, no more baby blankets - lol!

Great ideas. I still have the blankets from when I was a baby, and used them on both my kids. Also, it's always great to remind the new mom that they are a person, too, and not just a milker, changer, rocker, something to spit up on . . .

I like the idea of doing something for the mom since the baby is pretty much taken care of with showers and birth gifts.
