Announcing and then keeping New Year's Resolutions have become almost a cliché-like joke, given that most people seem to break them soon after. How can one do the job more effectively of keeping New Year's Resolutions? This article will give you some ways to assist in keeping New Year's Resolutions. The three examples I will use throughout are the quitting of smoking and cussing as well as exercising more.

Set Up A Support Network

When it comes to New Year's Resolutions like giving up smoking, cussing, or exercising more, it's so easy to make these bold claims that you're gonna keep them after the new year begins, but in reality, talk is cheap, and the will of humans is basically weak unless there is a foundation to support their dreams, goals, and desires. One of the best sources of keeping these resolutions comes in the form of enlisting multiple family members and friends, who can be there when the temptation to break those New Year's Resolutions is looming. Instead of going to the store to get that pack of cigarettes or spewing out a litany of profanity, make a call, text message, and/or email your support people. These folks know how much you want to change your past bad habit or habits. This process of calling, text messaging or emailing alone shifts your mind to thinking about proactively combating the temptation to smoke or cuss because you're focused on seeking out another person and less on puffing that cigarette or saying four-letter words in the moment.

It's best to have more than one support person because what happens if you have just one and that person isn't available when you call, text-message or email him or her? The more people you contact during the trial of temptation also serves for taxing your reserves; that is, making your body and mind more apt to be tired, and less in the mood to give into temptation.

Just Do It Even When It Doesn't Feel Good or Easy

Takeaways

Great tips! There is nothing like the crisp November air to walk in. I also try to go outside and exercise, even when it is technically too cold to do so.

FYI: the title was originally "3 Ways to Assist in Keeping New Year's Resolutions" (the word "Friends" wasn't there but was added by AC editorial). Still, if you think about it, you should be your best friend and my article is something that you can share with your friends who want to keep New Years Resolutions; and thus, the title still applies!
