Arts and Crafts Activities for the Letter O

Make an Olympic medal by covering a cardboard circle with tin foil and stapling a ribbon to the end so that it can loop around each child's neck.

Collect leaves and acorns from an oak tree and glue them to a paper plate with the center cut out to make an oak wreath.

Early Science and Math Activities for the Letter O

Learn about a day in the life of an otter, ostrich, owl, ox, or octopus. Search the library for books about either of these animals or record a segment from Animal Planet or PBS about any one of these animals.

Count the legs that each of the O animals (otter, ostrich, owl, ox,octopus) have and make a chart that classifies each animal by the number of legs that it has.

Practice tracing and drawing ovals. Identify whether shapes are circles or ovals.

Active Play Activities for the Letter O

Set up an obstacle course outside with several stations. Some ideas for obstacles include: balance beam (set a two by four on the ground), crawling (make a tunnel out of a table with a blanket over it), hopping (place three or four hula hoops on the ground for hopping in and out of), running (set out several cones to weave through running), throwing (have bean bags and a target or a low basketball hoop), and climbing (have the course go up the steps of the playground and down the slide to finish.

Host a mini Olympic Games and award each participant with a medal made from a ribbon with a large metal washer (appropriately O shaped) purchased from the hardware store. Let the children throw a large softball like a shot put, a Frisbee like a discuss, walk across a two by four like a gymnast, and run a relay race around the yard.

Snack Time on O Day

Serve a glass of orange juice with a bowl of O shaped cereal such as Cheerios, a bowl of oatmeal, or an omelete. Let the kids sample black and green olives. Or let the kids make a necklace out of o shaped cereals such as Fruit Flavored Cheerios to munch on while they drink a glass of milk.
