In an age where traditions have been skewed and modernized, it is no surprise that holidays are receiving an update as well. It is not for the worst, but can be viewed as just a way to shake things up. I'm talking about ditching the turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry jam; but not entirely. Do not feel like you are stripping the holiday of its true purpose and do not be afraid to try something different. The following are a few suggestions.

Turkey sandwiches & an afternoon biking. Make your thanksgiving day an active one and get off of the sofa from watching football/the Macy's Day Parade. While you will still have your turkey, just this time between buns, adding in an afternoon at the park riding around or even just playing Frisbee will be something the whole family can enjoy. If you are really on the lazy side, just stop by Subway or Quizno's on the way to the park instead of making your own turkey sandwiches.

Deep-fried turkey & French fries at the beach. Though it does not sound exactly healthy, it is still very well an alternative to the traditional stuffed turkey and mashed potatoes. All one needs are breadcrumbs, egg batter, and a skilled to be able to fry the turkey. French fries can be made by hand or straight from the freezer bag. Nonetheless, spending a day at the beach, though it may be cold and windy, is a unique way of spending Thanksgiving Day together. And the turkey is not left out.

Turkey & Cranberry ravioli at the campgrounds. Do something un-thought of: go camping on Thanksgiving Day. Leave the marshmallows at home though, and substitute with a pot and gas powered portable stove top to cook the turkey & cranberry raviolis you made at home. The recipe can be found here. This remix of Thanksgiving retains two of the most important elements of the traditional meal: the turkey and the cranberries. Though it seems easier to resort to turkey sandwiches or fried turkey when going camping, the preparation and cooking of the raviolis makes you feel as if you were still back home.
