What's that you say; you want to become a writer? For the past few years that I have been a full-time writer, I have been asked by many people how I do it, how they can do it, too and what you need to really get started in this business. In fact, the question is even asked by strangers that see my website or read one of my articles and then email me.

It's also a hot topic as many people want to know how they can make money with their writing, become better writers, get paid for working at home or make some extra cash. There are as many reasons for wanting to become a freelance writer as there are people wanting to do it.

When it comes to being a freelance writer, it takes one part skill, one part talent, and two parts determination. You have to really want to do it if you hope to become successful. What you lack in talent can be made up for in other areas, what you lack in skill can be learned but lack of determination can't be learned.

Freelance writing requires self-motivation. You have to put yourself out there and market and advertise yourself. You have to write even when you don't feel like it and you have to write when you can't think of anything to say. You have to keep schedules and meet deadlines if you hope to be taken seriously and make money in the industry. And for many of us, you have to do all of this while juggling a family and other responsibilities.

If you have decided you want to be a freelance writer, or maybe you are still dabbling in the thought of doing something serious with your writing, take these things into consideration.

-Why do you want to write?

- What kind of experience do you have already?

- How much time do you have to devote to writing?

- Can you keep a schedule when self- motivated?

- Are you detail oriented and do you adhere to deadlines?

-Are you good at following directions and meeting guidelines?

- Can you take constructive criticism?

-Are you willing to study, practice and learn how to become a better writer and a better business person?

- How much do you need/want to get paid for your writing?

Once you can honestly answer these questions, you will know if you are ready to move on in the industry and begin freelance writing as a career.

Lisa- I've just "discovered" you and I'm subscribing because I love your style. The one thing that I think you left out, though, is talent. You are very talented and have a gift for writing. Me? I just started *dabbling* with AC and I'm not sure if this is a hobby for me, or if it could turn into a semi-lucrative career choice. So far, it's definitely a hobby, but an enjoyable one at that.

Good introductory article for those interested in the profession. Excellent questions to get prospective writers thinking. Only thing I would add is: don't quit your day job until you have steady and predictable jobs lined up. :) Nice job!
