I'm positive I'm not the only one in this predicament. I'm sure plenty of people out there can raise their hands and say 'Yes, I am too goddamn chicken to ask my boss for a raise!'

See my hand? Its flying high. I am amongst the ranks of American workers who shake in their boots just thinking about the situation. Will he laugh in my face? Will he replace me? Will he find a reason to fire me?

But I need a goddamn raise, and just the thought of asking is frightening. I have played the scenario in my mind a million and one times this week. I turn around, face him at his desk of doom and ask 'hey boss, can I have a raise?'

No, that sounds so lame! Maybe I will write a letter? Lame, lame, lame! Fired, fired, fired! Ahhhh!

I definitely feel I deserve a raise. Yet for some reason I fear rejection. Rejection is part of it, but there is more involved in asking for that raise I so righteously deserve...there is the embarrassment. I feel like he should already know I am struggling to make a living... I mean hell he writes out my check every week...but for some reason I don't want him to think I am poor. He should know that though! Dammit!

I have been working for this company for 2 years. My first year I was part time, and I knew I didn't qualify for a raise, nor sick days or vacation on part time hours. However this December marks my one year status as a full time worker for the company.

The reason this has been itching at me is because I have never taken a sick day, never took a vacation. Recently though we had something happen at the office that forced me to have to leave early. Mind you this situation was completely out of my control, and was posed a health hazard if I remained in the office. So I went home early.

I figured this meant I would be payed seeing how the office HAD to be closed. I got my check the following week with the days pay missing. So I discovered the sucky way that I do not get sick pay...even for things that are out of my control. Just lovely.

On top of it when we are closed for a holiday, I do not get paid. I basically take a blow in my pay when the holidays arise. Holidays for me suck due to this cut in pay. Great!

Once Dad had to ask his boss to take away his raise, it was just enough to change his tax bracket and ended up costing him $50 a week or something like that. lol So, that is where knowing when to ask comes in I suppose! ~Good luck

Now that I am a bit older/wiser I remember my dad's advice and example. When he felt he deserved a raise he told the boss why he felt that way and what he felt he deserved. He would even look for other avenues if it didn't look like he would get what he wanted (but he always got his way). Once he got a raise that ended up being twice what mom was making so she quit her job and stayed home with us kids.

I worked for the same nursing home for 12 years and we got a $0.15 raise yearly if we earned it or not. Let me tell you, 15 cents is nothing!!! and after working your booty off for a year it is nearly a slap in the face! Other departments only got 10 cents, and on some years they didn't get that (they had a schedule and for some reason years 7 and something like 10 or 14 didn't get a raise if you worked in dietary or laundry/housekeeping departments--office staff had theirs by performance, go figure!!)

"So it is my feeling that if I'm not getting any sick pay, vacation pay, or benefits, I at least deserve a goddamn raise!? Anyone agree!?" Oh yeah! See my hand waving in the air? The thing is, if they were going to give benefits they would inform you. If they gave regular raises, even on a yearly basis, you would hear the buzz around the office that 'reviews are coming up'. If no one ever mentions these things, you may have to bite the bullet and either ask about benefits and a raise, or consider taking Dave's wise advice. It won't be easy, but you have to look out for yourself. MZ, Sending More Strength Vibes - You Can Do It!

Years ago I asked my boss for a raise and he threw me the keys to his car. I said, "what's this for?" He chuckled and said, "The jack is in the trunk. Give yourself as high a raise as you'd like." You'd have to know the guy. We've been friends for many years and we still laugh about it. That was almost 30 years ago (before you were born!! hehe). Best way to try for a raise is show what you've done to help out his business. But depending on his financial situation, he may not be able to give you the raise. Then you need to look for something else WITH BENEFITS!!!
