Negative Effects of Cannabis

Marijuana, or cannabis, remains a common recreational drug in the United States. For many adults, the effect of marijuana often leads to a state of relaxation and often is associated with pain rel
ief. For some individuals, however, the use of cannabis, or marijuana, may result in complications associated with reproductive health or sexuality.

In medical terms, marijuana use has been found to provide no aphrodisiac effects in the person who uses the drug for recreational purposes. In fact, some individuals who use cannabis, or marijuana, actually report complications involving decreased libido.

In men, however, there have been some reports that the use of cannabis, or marijuana, may actually serve to improve sexual performance. When examined further, we find that male sexual performance is not improved in terms of erection or ejaculation, however cannabis may promote relaxation allowing for a more free spirited sexual experience.

In rather small to moderate doses of cannabis, some men and women may feel the recreational drug has improved their sex life, leading to a desire to continue use of the drug for this reason. However, anyone who considers use of marijuana for the purpose of enhancing sexual pleasure, should be warned that adverse sexual outcomes may occur with high doses of the recreational drug.

In addition to conflict over sexuality and sexual performance, men who utilize cannabis, or marijuana, may find there is a significant decline in reproductive health. Because marijuana leads to decreases in the testosterone levels, the more marijuana you smoke, the greater the risk for complications with fertility and reproduction. In fact, sperm count will be notably smaller in the man who smokes marijuana regularly and may even lead to sterility.

  • Marijuana promotes relaxation which may improve sexual satisfaction
  • Sexual performance, in men, is not enhanced by marijuana use
  • Long term cannabis use may result in reproductive complications in both men and women
