Today's GPS receivers are coming equipped with more and more features. The first portable GPS devices were very basic and didn't come equipped with a lot of features. Nowadays, it can get a bit overwhelming when trying to shop for a GPS device because of the wide range of available features. This top 10 list will help you to focus on the important features to look for when purchasing a portable GPS device.

1. Text to Speech (TTS) The TTS feature is one of the most important features to look for in a GPS device. The reason for this is that it is really an essential safety feature for using a GPS device while driving. This feature works by not only telling you when to turn, but it also tells you actual street names to turn on. This allows you to keep your eyes on the road and not on the GPS device. This feature is starting to become an industry standard feature in automobile GPS devices, but there are still some devices that don't offer this feature.

2. Built-in Maps The heart of the GPS unit is its maps. It's a good idea to buy a GPS device that comes with preloaded maps. You must make sure, though, that the preloaded maps will be relevant for you, because manufacturers load maps based upon where the unit is to be sold (U.S., Europe, South America, etc.). You should look for the SiRFstarIII internal chip, with either TeleAtlas or Navteq maps. This will give you the best performance.
Also important is the ability to update the maps on your device. Most manufacturers will offer updates via computer, and some offer updates via CD-ROM. Make sure to find this information out, and be sure to check and see how much these map updates (or additional maps) cost. This information is available at the manufacturer's website.
