Monona and Farmersburg in Northeast Iowa just gained two new lady Mayors. Could this be a sign of the times?

This is not Monona's first time to elect a female Mayor. Darlene Russett was the first lady Mayor in office in Monona. This time around it will be Fran Passmore. Passmore ran unopposed.

Farmersburg is right behind Monona also voting in a female, Maggie Corlett. This will be Farmersburg's first lady Mayor. Corlett fits into the landslide victory category, running against a male candidate, Lee Zurcher, she won 58 votes to 7. The new lady mayors will take office Jan. 1, 2008.

If local voters in any way mirror the nations sentiments on the issue of women in power, there is a good chance that we will have a woman President in the White House next year. In case you haven't noticed Senator Hillary Rhodham Clinton is running for the presidency.

The US is yet to elect a female leader and that puts it a little behind the times on an international scale. However, it could be disastrous to elect a woman simply because of a desire to find a ying and yang balance. Not any woman will do, as Britain found out to its peril.

The UK had Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady, a disaster for Britain, she was viewed as a war monger who would have been prosecuted for war crimes among other things had she not become conveniently senile.

While Thatcher new that she could have done a lot to further the position of women politically on an international scale, she done more to damage them. She privatized everything and would have done away with the National Health system if she could. Interestingly the UK has not had a female Prime Minister / leader since!

"A great deal I think on the future of women at the top will depend on how I do... I do know I could do an awful lot for women at the top and for women trying to get to the top and for the acceptance of women, for their talents and abilities." (Margaret Thatcher Former Prime Minister of Great Britain said in 1979)

As a brit who was present at the time that maggie got in I can assure you that all the women that i knew voted for maggie because she was a woman. I agree that was not why she was bad, but the point is we have to be careful of not repeating errors. Further, it is definitely important to note that Hillary stood by her cad of a husband, it says a lot about her and how she will be happy to stand by liars and cheats and carry on as if they are oki doki. I could have mentioned her own war appetite for profit from war as you said, but the point was about electing a woman for the sake of it! Thanks for your constructive comments though, even if you did miss the point a bit.

You are right about Thatcher, altough I don't think she was elected there just because she was a woman, and she wasn't bad for that reason either. And I don't think that's the reason Hillary will win. That she has, as you put it, a "cad" for a husband, has little bearing. Is that kind of moral misstep more egregious than the immorality of war for profit, rampant cronyism, chronic ineptitude, etc..
