If you've been selected as the Matron of Honor at your friend or relative's wedding, you have a number of responsibilities to look forward to on the Big Day. From helping the bride with the dress to signing the marriage license, the Matron of Honor plays a very active role during the planning phases of the wedding, and the actual day. You get to play the gracious hostess and mingle with the crowd with a coveted title. Here are a few things you should know if you will be the Matron of Honor at a wedding:

You'll be walking down the aisle. Be prepared to be the center of attention during the main wedding procession, and plan accordingly with appropriate footwear (those too-tall high heels might need to retire for the day), a practice walk, and enough energy to make it through this key moment without a single stress line on your face.

You'll be the gracious hostess throughout the ceremony. People will be turning to you for their designated seating spot and will need direction for managing presents, coats, and even locating the happily wedded couple after the main events. You'll need to be on your toes to make sure things go smoothly, and right on schedule.

You'll be working with wedding coordinators. Make sure you know who and where the party planners are throughout the events. The Matron of Honor can help with basic setup and various activities coordinated by the hired help.

You're responsible for the bride's dress. From helping the bride get dressed, to arranging the train during The Walk, you'll be responsible for making sure she looks absolutely perfect. You'll also need to hold the bride's bouquet at various intervals, so make sure you're hands-free more often than not.

You'll be signing the marriage license. Be prepared to emblazon your signature on the license as a witness for the ceremony.

You'll be in charge of return/pick-up of the rented dress. If the bride has decided to rent her dress, you'll be asked to pick it up and return it on the specified dates. Make sure you have enough gas in your car throughout wedding week so you're not at a loss for last-minute bridal store runs!

Be prepared to sign the marriage license as the Matron of Honor.

Thanks...my maid of honor duties are in full swing through April 2008. I didn't know I would get to sign the marriage license! That's cool. :)
