Political Analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson Discusses Illegal Immigration's Impact on African-Americans in his new book, The Latino Challenge to Black America: Towards a Conversation between African-Americans and Hispanics.

Political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson details the anger and hostility that many African-American community activists and rank and file workers express toward illegal immigrants on the issue of driving licenses for illegal immigrants in his new book The Latino Challenge to Black America: Towards a Conversation Between African-Americans and Hispanics (middlepassagepress.com).

Hutchinson tells how the driving license controversy is part of the bigger concern of many African-Americans over jobs, health care, education, public services and gang violence in relation to illegal immigration. They vehemently contend that illegal immigrants do take jobs from blacks, especially poor, unskilled young blacks.

Hutchinson assesses the impact of illegal immigration on jobs and the economy in black communities. "Illegal immigration has touched a raw nerve among many blacks, "says Hutchinson, "they are absolutely convinced that they contribute to crime, violence and chronic unemployment in black communities. The great fear of many blacks is that issuing drivers license to illegal immigrants sends the message that illegal immigrants have the same rights and privileges as blacks and other Americans. This could create even more tensions and divisions between blacks and Latinos.

Every American should be madd as ell! You work for something yet others get paid? The only good thing about New York Drivers license for illegal aliens is they would head towards New York in droves. Better there than here. I need the tax relief. We could open up that closed hospital again. The traffic would be lighter. The security fence could be turned off and save electricity. Perhaps the motion sensor light also. Illegals are our cousins, ops bush cuzins. The politicians have cheated us long enuf vote em out!

I know that my child was badly injured and could not go to the clinic for a follow up while the place was full of illegal immigrants. I don't hate anyone except the system. I am not some ignorant black dog dancing around the masters leg trying to get favoritism over the brown dog, I am better than that. Black people wake up go get it for yourself instead of waiting on dogbones. I will graduate from college in May at 39 years old. Recognize what is coming at you and elevate your social status by investing in yourself. Hell will freeze over and you will still be looking up at master with those soulful eyes while the world goes on without you. I realize that it may seem hard for some but stop whining and aim for something.

It is known that the port jobs in Long Beach (payrates often $40. or $60. an hour) are mainly held by illegal immigrants; predominately Mexicans. The jobs are so in demand there is a lottery system for hiring and I know homeless African/Americans hoping for a coveted position. I have also seen homeless young men turned down for construction jobs because they do not speak Spanish. Blacks having faced barriers due to discrimination, do have a right to anger about illegal immigration.

I do know blacks who feel doubly cheated by the US government feeling illegal immigrants are being treated better than they have been. Legal immigrants seem to be favored over born citizens with small business loans and grants. I have seen discrimination among these business owners from various countries directed at African-Americans while not having an issue with Latinos. Mexican-Mafia~who usually enter the country sans laws~are indeed having a negative impact here in California.
