Ain't No Sunshine
Back in the day, God spoke to meAnd gave me a staff to part the sea
But now he's not around so much.
I think he's busy with the Dutch-
The Protestants are all in style
And predestination makes God smile
This is what it's like for has-beens;
The losses weigh more than the wins.
They used to call me the liberator
Back when I was tight with the Creator.
But now at parties I stand alone
And when I talk the people groan:
"We don't want to hear about
The basket and reeds and how you got out."
That Ark was heavy, the sun was hot!
When I carried it to that sacred spot.
But now they all just want to know
Did it have lasers, did it glow?
I prayed away the plague and fire,
When to idols they'd aspire.
The world back then was harsh and just
But God was something I could trust.
I had to walk the wilderness,
And I bore even this,
But this promised land of milk and honey
Doesn't grow much folding money
I think He's still around here now,
I think that He can see me bow
I look for burning shrubbery
But underbrush is all I see.
I could call him back I think
If I pushed him to the brink.
Maybe I'll buy a sacred cow
And start saying "you" instead of "thou."
