The Other November Holidays

When we think about November, two holidays generally come to mind- Veteran's Day and, of course, Thanksgiving Day. What, though, of the many unsung holidays in this month, pitifully unknown, forgotten or ignored?

Did you know about these odd, but just as legitimate November holidays?

Vinegar Day (November 1)

If you have long believed that vinegar has not received its due respect, then this day should make you proud.

Vinegar Day is celebrated globally, as people who apparently have little else to do in life, participate in vinegar tastings and special vinegar-themed activities.

Plan Your Epitaph Day- (November 2)

Who invented this holiday, Boris Karloff? Anyway, the focus of this special day is for people to contemplate what they want written on their gravestones. Hey, boys, let's break out a round of embalming fluid for everybody at the bar!

Sandwich Day (November 3)

It's only fair, after going through such a dreary holiday as Plan Your Epitaph Day, that we follow it up with something to cheer us up again. Sandwich Day honors the illustrious John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich,

credited with inventing the edible treat that bears his name. The Earl is said to have created the treat, so he could chow down without having to leave the gambling table. Who would ever have guessed that addiction could inspire genius?

National Saxophone Day (November 6)

This is a time to wax nostalgic about your "band nerd" days, when you marched with your saxophone onto the middle of the football field during halftime and played crappy arrangements of old rock and roll songs with your fellow instrumentalists. Really, it's just a time to celebrate an instrument that either makes you get all tingly or feel extremely annoyed when you hear it played.

National Men Make Dinner Day (November 7)

Yeah, right. Unless you are married to Emeril or one of the guy chefs on Iron Chef America, it may be a struggle getting the man in your life to go for this one. Even if he does, you may not want to deal with cleaning up the mess he made. Of course, some dudes may rise to the occasion and just surprise you.

Or not.

Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day (November 8)
