The holidays. While a great time to be with friends and family, the holidays can also bring some serious havoc to already high credit card debt or tight budgets. Some people tend to overspend or just go a little crazy, and that's why some of these holiday shopping reminders may come in handy.

First of all, now is just as good a time as any to start your holiday shopping. Thanksgiving hasn't hit, and while most advertisers have already started egging on shoppers to believe that they need to start their holiday shopping now, most haven't actually done so.

This means it is a perfect time for you to start your shopping to get it out of the way so you can enjoy the holidays.

To begin with, you should always create a budget. Budgets help you map out how much money you need, allow you to avoid forgetting to get a present for someone and help you not to overspend. Your budgets should be as specific as possible. For example, write down the size, color and exact price of what you need to get. Make sure to keep this list with you whenever you go out shopping. (Either write it on a piece of paper so you won't lose it or keep it in your cell phone - whatever you need to do to keep it with you).

Attempt to pay for everything in cash. This may be difficult since most people don't start setting aside money for the holidays until the last minute. So, if you absolutely cannot pay cash for everything, make sure to keep your credit card transactions to a minimum and purchase items that can be paid off at least by the end of the holiday season (so maybe by the end of January or early February).

Also, keep in mind the fact that spending more doesn't always necessarily mean you're getting a superior gift. Look out for bargains at outlets or keep an eye out for discounts through online retailers. Many places such as Amazon.com are offering free shipping or percentages off your total if you spend a certain amount. Use these promotions to your advantage. Realize that the free shipping offers will always be for standard shipping so allow yourself some time by ordering items early.

Takeaways
  • Think early when it comes to holiday shopping
  • Try to buy only with cash or limit your credit purchases to only what you can pay off by January
  • Take advantage of free shipping
