Top Ten "Single" Cities in America Listed by Social Club for Singles

Where Are the Greatest Number of Singles Between the Ages of 24 and 55?

In a Nov. 12 press release, Meet Market Adventures (MMA) identifies the ten American cities with the greatest population of singles between the ages of 24 and 55. Among those cities, MMA also identifies what

percent of each city's population is single. The company compiled its figures from the census data from both the U.S. and Canada.

Travis Hartley is the founder of Meet Market Adventures. He says that "in today's age of postponed marriages, longer working hours and high divorce rates, it's no surprise that there are 25.4 million single adults between the ages of 24 and 55 living in North America."

So what do the census statistics say about the ten top single cities in the U.S? According to MMA, New York City has more than 1.9 million singles, the largest number of any U.S. city. Detroit comes in as number ten, with just 394,000 singles.

However, the concentration or percentage of singles may be more important than the actual number. Looking at that figure, the top ten list changes considerably. Number one, in terms of boasting the highest percentage of singles between the ages of 24 and 55, is Washington, DC, with singles constituting nearly 44 percent of its population. Los Angeles is number ten, with fewer than 29 percent of its population consisting of singles.

Specifically, the top ten in terms of number of singles are:

New York - 1.9 million
Los Angeles - 1.1 million
Chicago - 921,000
Philadelphia - 592,000
Washington, DC - 586,000
Boston - 509,000
Miami - 508,000
Dallas/Ft. Worth - 464,000
Atlanta - 458,000
Detroit - 394,000

The top ten in terms of percentage of singles are:

Washington, DC - 44 percent
Atlanta - 39 percent
Boston - 37 percent
Philadelphia - 34 percent
Dallas/Ft. Worth - 33 percent
Chicago - 33 percent
New York - 32 percent
Miami - 30 percent
Detroit - 30 percent
Los Angeles - 29 percent

Of the Los Angeles metro area, online article "The Best U.S. Cities for Singles" says there are some 40,000 more single men than single women. Dallas also has more single men than women. In the New York area, however, there are 185,000 more single women than men.

Those poor women in New York! Now I understand why they were always complaining about the lack of single men on "Sex and the City."

Well, Saginaw Michigan has more single women than men, that's the only way I ever managed to get married a quarter century ago! -- Mike. (P.S., seriously, the second set of stats, the percentage of the population, is the key. If we just use raw whole numbers, New York and Los Angeles and maybe Chicago will be MOST in everything, for example, most singles AND most married people, most Catholics AND most protestants AND most Baptists, etc.)

Great article! It almost looks like the single rates are relative to population, but then when you get into percentages, there are actually cities with the higher rate of single people per capita.
