You can easily create your own custom designer magnets in a matter of minutes.

The possibilities are endless. Just of few of the items that make great magnet toppers are heavy duty plastic stickers, paper cut-outs, buttons, cards, old hardware, coins, photos, jewelry, beads, pins, toys, dice, rocks, fabric and more.

Thrift stores are a good place to find retro or vintage magnet supplies, or you can use buttons and other costume jewelry items from around the house. However, if you are going for the professional designer look, check out the scrapbook supplies section of your local craft store. I got my supplies from Michaels craft store. I used 3D butterfly stickers and fabric coated rivets, but you can use just about anything that suits your style. They have a variety of materials in a plethora of shapes, textures and styles; everything from plastic dots, charms, rivets, stickers and clips, to a variety of thingamajiggers made from paper, plastic, fabric and metal in just about any style and color you can think of.

Don't forget to pick up a package of magnets while you are at the craft store. The magnets are available in either small packs of just one or two, or large packs of 20 or more; the bigger the pack, the lower the price per magnet.

The magnets also come in different sizes as well as a variety of strengths and thicknesses. Make sure you buy magnets that are slightly smaller than the topper that you plan to glue to it to insure that the magnet part doesn't show from behind. Also, if you are planning on using a heavy metal topper, make sure to get a higher strength magnet to support the weight.

Next you will need glue to attach the magnet base to the decorative topper. Epoxy's work best; check the label of the glue to see what types of materials it will adhere to. Make sure to get one that will stick to metal. Even if you are using stickers for your magnet topper, I would recommend adding some glue for extra strength. The sticker glue can dry out over time and your designer magnet may eventually fall apart.

Glue your decorative toppers onto the magnet base, let dry according to package instructions, and you're done.
