When most women hear the word football, they instinctively roll their eyes suggesting general disgust. However, before making a snap judgment, women need to consider how exhilarating and enjoyable watching the game can be when you understand the basics.

The Season

This is perhaps the most exciting part of the football season because teams are determining whether they will be securing their spot in the playoffs. After each team in each conference is solidified, the wild card games will determine additional teams who will get to participate. When the playoffs begin, it becomes an edge of your seat suspenseful time where one by one the AFC and NFC teams decide who will go on to the ever coveted Superbowl. Now I know most of you are familiar with the Superbowl if for no other reason for the parties, the food, the half time show and the famed commercials. I submit to you there is so much more to the big game than these things. Especially when you consider the lame commercials they have been coming out with over the last couple of years, the accidental wardrobe malfunctions and subsequent lame-o halftime shows. Give it a try and you may find that football isn't just a sport but an action packed suspense thriller that will keep you biting your nails and begging for more.

Fundamentals

Choose a team that you can support. I don't care what your reasons are; it could be the color of the uniforms, the cute quarterback, or if you are really serious, the actual quality of the team.

Learn the NFL numbering system. 1-9 Quarterbacks and Kickers, 10-19 Quarterbacks, Receivers, and Kickers, 20-49 Running Backs and Defensive Backs, 50-59 Centers and Linebackers, 60-79 Defensive Linemen and Offensive Linemen, 80-89 Receivers and Tight Ends, 90-99 Defensive Linemen and Linebackers

FYI- I'm NOT the prominent member of the family AmyCH mentioned in the comment-at least that's what she told me. Probably true since I usually make myself scarce when the game is on!

Great topic! I do understand football but I still don't care for the game! :)

I was tempted to translate this article to league-mad English people or explain this to rugby-mad New Zealanders. But this does the job very well.

Interesting article. Sorry about the graphic/article pairing though.

The picture used in this article was not the one I chose. I would never have used such a thing! I find it degrading to women and offensive!

Oh so very true! You have just described a prominent member of my family. There is simply nothing more annoying unless they are shouting -go go- or get him. My personal favorite is - break his knees! lol

Please note to women who attempt to watch football from now on, please shut up during the game! :) There is nothing worse than going to a "football party" and having most of the guys' girlfriends yakking about nails and makeup during 4th and inches in the 4th quarter.

What a great article! The first time I went to a high school football game with my female friends and wanted to know how the game was played, we decided to ask the cop who was working security figuring if he took that gig he probably liked and knew about football. He was a bit taken aback but quickly warmed to our questions and explained the basics.

Ok, I'll admit, I've never liked football, mainly because I actually couldn't understand the concept of it. Reading this, I think I understand a little bit more than I did, but not much. Guess it's too complicated for my sinple mind. Basketball's my game, I may not know every single rule of the game there is too know but atleast I have a broad understanding of what is going on. Good artical tho.
