Help each child use a hole puncher to punch holes around a postcard. Tie a long piece of yarn to one end to make a lacing card.
Make a collage of items that are yellow. Cut out pictures from magazines and find stickers of school busses, chicks, bees, daffodils, suns, and other yellow items.
Read from a children's animal encyclopedia about yaks. Ask questions about the reading afterwards to see if the children remember.

Have the children arrange pieces of yarn in order from the shortest piece to the longest piece.
Early Literacy Activities for the Letter Y
Learn a song that includes yelling such as "John Jacob Jingle Himer Schmidt." Encourage children to yell the ending part really loudly.
Talk about what the words yesterday, today, and tomorrow mean. Fold a long piece of paper into three sections. On the first section, have each child draw a picture of something they did yesterday. On the second section, draw something they did today. And on the third section, draw something they want to do tomorrow. Have a helper write a sentence below each picture that the child dictates about that picture.
Use a yardstick to measure how many yards a wall, hallway, or fence line is.
Active Play Activities for the Letter Y
Give a demonstration on how to use a yo-yo. Let each child take a turn attempting to use the yo-yo. Remind them that it takes a lot of practice to learn how to use a yo-yo correctly.
Show the children how to do the limbo. Let them practice trying to limbo under a yardstick that two helpers hold.
Have a clean up the yard day.
Snack Time for the Letter Y
Make yogurt pops by filling small paper cups with yogurt, then covering with foil or plastic wrap. Push a popsicle stick through the plastic wrap or tin foil and freeze overnight or for a few hours until frozen. Peel off the paper cup before serving.
Sample yellow foods such as bananas, lemonade, yellow Jello, yellow squash, and corn bread.
