Christmas in the park was a tradition in the 1970s in St. Mary's, Georgia, and will make a comeback this year with the help of donations and gifts of effort and time from community volunteers.
Christmas in the Park has events scheduled for the entire day, beginning with the Search for the Yule Log Contest, an annual event held in St. Mary's. The Search for the Yule Log Contest will begin at 11am at the St. Mary's Welcome Center, where clues will be handed out. Participants will walk through the streets of downtown St. Mary's searching for two Yule logs, containing prizes of $100 each. Parents may help children with the clues, but the child must find the Yule log on his or her own without the help of the parent in order to be eligible for the prize.
The end of the scavenger hunt will cue Santa's arrival in the park. During Santa's visit, he will be giving 1,000 children stockings full of goodies.
The winners of The Best Gingerbread House contest, The Ugliest Christmas Sweater contest, and the House Lighting contest will be announced on December 15th as well.
The Gingerbread House contest is a new tradition for St. Mary's. Adults and children have their own divisions for the contest. All participants must register for the contest by December 13th and all houses must be at the park by 1pm on the 15th. Everyone who attends the festival will be able to vote on their favorite houses, displayed on tables located in the park.
The Christmas House Lighting contest will determine the house with the most Christmas spirit. All participating houses must be registered by December 5th.
The Ugliest Christmas Sweater contest is also a new tradition in St. Mary's. Contestants can create sweaters for the contest and must be present on the 15th between 2-4pm, wearing the sweater, in order to be judged for this contest. All individuals who want to participate need to register by December 13th.
