Our eyes met, and in that moment we knew we were from two different worlds—she a lady of fine feather and me a common mortal soul. We occupied a mutual space, but our stations in life were separated by the laws of nature.

I saw fear in her eyes, and my heart broke, knowing myself to be of gentle character. I spoke quietly but did not approach, perceiving her to be concerned for the welfare of her children nestled near her. I understood her temerity but hoped she would sense in me a protector, a benefactor.

Over the next several weeks the members of my Clan went about their duties, passing respectfully by her home. The grounds-keeper manicured the lawn and took his moments of respite sipping tea and perusing the daily news within uncomfortable proximity to the Lady. I too had my gardening duties and, of necessity, passed close to her, giving her a start. Initially, the lovely lady fled in panic during our benign intrusions, seemingly to distract us from disturbing her children.

Gradually, subtly, she began to abide our presence over a narrowing distance. We greeted her in subdued tones, hoping to accustom her to our inevitable company. “Hi Mrs. D. How are the kids?” Whereas at first she tried to misdirect our attention concerning her children, she now lingered protectively in her home sensing her presence was more important than our diversion.

Rains came for days on end, and when the sun shone once again she went about clearing the debris and putting her house is order. Those of our Clan joined in the mission as if working in union toward a common goal yet clearly within boundaries of class and temperament.

A Love Story

Early in her time with us Mrs. Duckie was off her nest quite a bit which made us rearful for the survival of the four ducklings. The story isn't over, and the love will never be over.

This is such a well written story. It is a great tactic to keep a surprise for the end.

Well written. Kept me thinking. Did not suspect ending.

I loved the deceptive tactic you used with this. What a surprise.
