Overview

The Acropolis serves great food in a family-oriented, casual atmosphere. If you love Greek food, this is a great place for the overall experience. The location is convenient for those on the southside of Indianapolis.

Pros

Great food; casual atmosphere; live entertainment on weekends (dancers)

Cons

Crowded seating; sub-par sound system

Description

The atmosphere is clean and casual. If you're looking for an overly ritzy dining experience, this isn't your spot. However, if you enjoy a more relaxed environment, then head on down. You'll be greeted by Gus, the owner, and you won't feel stifled by pretense.

The Acropolis consistently has some of the city's greatest bellydancers providing free, live entertainment on the weekend. (Of course, dancers generally work for tips, so you may want to bring a few extra bills to respectfully show your appreciation of the art at your table.) Sadly, the sound system doesn't quite match up to the shimmying pyrotechnics of the dancers. The music tends to be a bit tinny and staticky at times.

The saganaki here is absolutely wonderful. It's the best in the city! The lounge that adjoins the restaurant offers another entertainment option for adults.

Located at 1625 E. Southport Rd., the Acropolis is in a good location for the southside of Indy. Call (317)787-8883 for info.

Full Review

The food at the Acropolis is very good all around. Having gone several times, I've managed to sample lots of dishes on the menu. The gyros, of course, are wonderful and huge, and everyone raves about their salad. Of course, I'm a sucker for baklava, and the Acropolis serves up a wonderful version of the flaky, sweet, nutty pastry.

Gus, the owner of the Acropolis, is at the restaurant most nights, and he and his family do a great job of making the environment welcoming to all families. If you plan to take kids out for Greek food, this is the best place for it. The casual atmosphere sets you at ease, and your kids can draw on the paper placemats. And on the weekends, most of the dancers won't mind sharing the shimmying with little ones who want to shake it, too.

Nice article...I know that ideas can be misconstrued in print, is it true that the dancers are performing for tips? I remember gettting paid more than most restaurants pay now in the 70's (don't ask Spider Lady her age....HAHAHAHA!) But, I also made more than my weeks pay check as a state employee for dancing two sets. I think that dispite a wonderful time at the Internationl Festival this week, there are many Hoosier's that they are worldly but lack any ideas about other cultures. So, please keep up the good work with education. (I doubt you readers are the one's with a lack... SMILES)
