As the Christmas shopping season prepares to swing into high gear following Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales nationwide, many parents are considering ways to make their dollar stretch as far as it can this holiday season. As they consider which toys to purchase this Christmas, not only are they bogged down with concerns about recent lead paint recalls in the US, but they may be shocked to learn that toy prices are varying widely in stores across the nation. As parents head out to purchase toys for their children this Christmas, they may be wondering whether Toys R Us or Target will be their best bet for thrifty spending. They may be surprised to learn that the same item is going for substantially more in some stores than in others.

Toy shopper and mother of two Diane Eimer recently shook her head in disgust about the toy price discrepancies at the two major toy retailers. "This is the first year since I've been on the Christmas toy shopping scene that Toys R Us prices are way higher than Target. I mean A LOT higher, not just a few dollars." She shared two shopping experiences that had left her returning items to Toys R Us after locating the exact same item in Target for substantially less. One purchase, in fact, was called something different at both stores and packaged slightly differently, but was the same item, with a $20 price difference, upon closer inspection. Called the Barbie RV Party Bus at Toys R Us and the Barbie Hot Tub Party Bus at Target, the product descriptions are identical, even though the price tag reads $20 higher at Toys R Us.

Takeaways
  • Prices may be higher at toy chains than at retailers such as Target.
  • Toys with different names at different stores may actually be the same product.
  • Parents should spend the time researching their purchases in order to get the best bargain.

Target is one of my favorite places to shop! Thanks for the info.

I wonder if Toys-R-Us marks up their prices intentionally. They are geared toward kids and even have play areas to cater to them. It's fun to go there but their prices are gouging at times. Target and Wally World are pretty comparable--especially since Target has followed suit by selling groceries. We'll probably do most of our shopping at Target this year as they have opened a new Super Target closer to our home--that will save us gas costs. Great article!

I was watching K-Mart too, they had Lego sets "buy two get one free" but their overall prices on them were a lot higher so you weren't really saving anything. Great comparison!

Great article! There are a few items cheaper at Toys R Us, but Target generally has the lowest price. It sort of depends on what you get. Wal-Mart outprices them both much of the time. However, Wal-Mart doesn't always have the lowest price either. Like you said in a comment below, it's all about shopping around. :-)

Good information. I was just in Toys R Us, they didn't have what I wanted and prices did seem higher.

I love Target, too....Toys R Us has good sale items...but it is the old bait and switch...you may get had if you don't pay attention to what is onsale. Great article.

Target is my favorite by far.

Good article... Toys R Us is a scary place at Christmas time regardless.

I love Target, but the closest one is 45 minutes away. :(

We don't have Target here :( Toys R Us is often over priced though. The deals after Christmas is the way to go with them. Great article and interview!

Some shops can be so pricey. Nicely done, Kelly. Sophie

I want to be sure to add here that in doing research, I certainly did find items that were cheaper at Toys R Us, as well as some that were the same price at both locations. But for many of the items I was interested in, as well as the person I interviewed, Target won hands down. This article is simply to stress the importance of going to stores and researching prices before you head out to buy, because you may be surprised by who has the lowest price. Thanks for the feedback so far!
