Little-Known Christmas Facts

We all know that Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. But do you know what a wreath on your front door symbolizes, or who invented Christmas lights? Well, I did some uncovering of little-known Christmas facts and found some answers.

Ralph E Morris came up with the idea of
Christmas lights in 1895.

If you have a Christmas wreath hanging on your front door as a decoration, it symbolizes a sign of welcome and long life for all who enter.

Oregon is the state that produces the most Christmas trees. They have grown an average of 9 million per year.

The idea of the Christmas Club which is a savings account that people put money in for their annual Christmas shopping came into effect in 1905.

The traditional Christmas dinner in early England was the head of a pig.

Americans buy close to 37.1 million real Christmas trees each year.

The first state to celebrate and recognize the Christmas holiday was Alabama in 1836.

Contrary to popular belief, Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day of the year. The weekend before Christmas is the 2 busiest shopping days of the year.

The average household will mail out approximately 28 Christmas cards each year.

Visa credit cards are used 5,340 times each minute during the holiday shopping season.

There are 2 Christmas Islands: One in the Pacific Ocean and one in the Indian Ocean.

Some neat ways people around the country celebrate Christmas: In Armenia, meal on Christmas Eve consists of fried fish, lettuce and spinach. In Norway, Christmas Eve is celebrated by having a big dinner and then opening presents, much like we here in America do. The twist is that after all those festivities; all the brooms in the house are hidden. This is done because long ago Norwegians believed that witches came out on Christmas Eve and would steal their brooms. In Portugal, the Christmas meal is eaten in the wee hours of Christmas Day while the Yule log burns brightly. The charred ashes are saved because later in the year, the ashes are burned with pine cones during thunderstorm season.

Christmas trees have been sold in the Unites States since 1850.

Those are great facts! And I have been known to wait until the weekend before to get my shopping done but I have never wanted to attempt Black Friday shopping. :)
