I hear the echoes of Walt Whitman, whispering "Carpe diem. Carpe diem.'' I remember being taught that doors rarely open in life and when they do(if only slightly)you must try to make your play.

That's why the writer's strike may not be such a bad idea after all. Yes, I am aware of the ramifications on the economy and the domino effect this will have, but I'm also thinking about the boy inside who lived for the cinema. That's why as a man I do protest, but just not over there on the same sidewalk where the writer's are.

While The WGA and studio executives are groveling over revenue shares from internet broadcasts and podcasts may the real literary voices please step forth. If there has ever been a time for the independent filmmaker then your time is definitely at hand. I call upon you to cross the picket lines and part the sea of poor, disenfranchised writers(you might stumble upon some actors as well looking for a photo op)who struggle and toil with their meritorious cause.

I call upon you scab. I appeal to your hunger and the purity of your writing. The battle might get a little fierce out there because of the number of egos you will have to combat with, but pull yourself out of the trenches and construct some true heroes and villains worth fighting for. The world is waiting for another Captain Willard, another Don Corleone, another Han Solo, another Reservoir Dog.

Let the studio bosses and picketers fight it out, meanwhile go find your opening and take it. Don' forget your most valuable tool-your love for the craft. Also keep somewhere in the back of your mind this isn't like the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. The president isn't likely to issue a federal injunction anytime soon.

Trust me, I'm ready to be rescued from one more season of American Idol, shows like Studio 60, and the myriad of Hollywood remakes in the last few years. Yes, maybe this isn't such a bad idea! If lesser, unknown, hungry, writers are what it takes to make Hollywood respectable again then I'm all about it!
