Asthma is one of many medical disorders that have been increasing in the number of diagnosis over the years. It can be passed on genetically: My husband inherited asthma from his father, my husband's daughter inherited asthma from her father (both are non-smokers), and our grandson has just been diagnosed as an asthmatic at the age of three years old. Asthma can also be caused by the environment: Excessive pollutants in the air, allergies from pollen, dust, pet dander, chemicals in the air at work or even in the home, and many other environmental substances. And, of course, asthma can be self-inflicted by smoking or doing drugs. The worst case scenario, and unfortunately all too often, asthma can be given to a child by neglectful and lack of prenatal care, specifically smoking during pregnancy.
