According to the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), Jetmax International Ltd has recalled its wooden storage racks made for children, due to the death of a child.

Jetmax International, Ltd, located in Irving, TX has voluntarily recalled the storage racks with canvas bins in cooperation with the CPSC on November 16, 2007.

The reason for the recall is that the rack can tip over easily, which can cause a child to potentially become entrapped and suffer asphyxiation.

An 8 month old boy was trapped under the storage rack after it fell on him. The wooden bar across the top fell over his neck, which caused asphyxiation. This is the only reported incident involving this rack.

There are two designs of this rack, one for girls and one for boys. They were sold at both Wal-Mart and Ollie's stores nationwide.

These are three-leveled wooden toy storage racks with nine removable canvas totes with wooden rods. There are also handles on both of the solid sides of the rack. The boy's rack has a natural wood color with red, yellow, green, and navy colored totes. The girl's rack is white with pink, yellow, lime, and purple colored totes.

The model sold at Wal-Mart is sold under this title and brand: "Home Trend Kids 9 Canvas Bin Boy's and Girl's Organizers." The UPC #'s are # 9223900109 (Boy's) and # 9223900122 (Girl's).

The racks were made in China and were sold in Wal-Mart stores between August 2004 and July 2005. They were also sold at Ollie's stores between July 2006 through June 2007. These retailed at about $40.

Anyone who has this product should immediately remove the product from the use of children and contact Jetmax International. The company is giving a free repair kit to those owning this storage rack that will allow for more stability of the base.

To get the free repair kit for your storage rack, please call Jetmax International at 1-800-689-2168 between 9am and 5pm CT. You may also visit the website (http://www.jlwoodenmfg.com) or email info@jlwoodenmfg.com.

It's very sad what happened to that little boy, but you know, there's just no way to make a product 100% safe for children. None. No matter how it's made, there is always going to be SOME risk of injury. I'm also not blaming the parents here, because I know how hard it is to completely baby-proof and watch your child every second, but I can't fault the company in this instance.

I agree Elena - so sad. You know Donna, it's true that there are so many products that kids can pull on themselves. I think the logic in recalling this one is the asphyxiation factor. My kids used to knock over a toy storage rack before, but all the plastic bins scatter and the rack was so lightweight, it may not really do much damage (not that I want it falling on them). However, in this instance, this one actually pins down the child. We don't have our storage rack before because I took it away once it fell a couple times (different brand), but if that one would have fallen on top of someone, I don't think it would be able to pin them down because it was extremely lightweight (probably the reason it fell easily). I hope people see this and are able to get the repair kit needed. It seems that if it was more stable, this would likely not happen. If we ever get any storage racks like that again, I'll be attaching to the wall from the backside to avoid such disasters.

As sad as this is and as FED UP with "made in China" products, I wonder if in this particular case, the recall is logical? I mean kids can pull so many things over on them and injuries occur on both well attended kids and those neglected. This kind of hints at the latter. Just wondering out loud...

I agree you two - too sad. I am doing my best to keep up with any recalls so that I can continue to post them in hopes of spreading the word and possibly preventing somebody from getting harmed from these products.

I too feel bad for the family - what a horrible way to lose a son.

This is awful for the family, and made worse in a way by AC being so cheap as to computerize "related topics" instead of hiring some real human beings. As we all can see, one related topic for this article is "death."
