Well it was a much different result for the Tarheels in their second regular season game. The Tarheels blew out Iona 107-72 on their home court. The heels looked much better than they did in their opener against Davidson. They actually looked liked the #1 team in the country. Here are some of the key notes from the game: Tyler Hansbrough had Twenty-seven points and nine rebounds.
Danny Green had fifteen points off the bench.
Wayne Ellington added 14 points.
Both Ty Lawson and Deon Thompson had 13 points.
The Tarheels looked much better in game number 2 of the season. Tyler Hansbrough stayed out of foul trouble and scored 27 points. This despite receiving constant double and triple teams. The heels shot the ball well from the outside. The team shot 10-24 from three point land for 42 percent. This came from several players including Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Bobby Frasor and Danny Green. The Tarheels also got good minutes from Deon Thompson. Thompson scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds. He looked much more active and aggressive then his first game. He even blocked several shots, an area that will be a question for the heels after losing Branden Wright to the NBA. The heels also did a good job of pushing the ball up the court. Their depth was just too much for Iona.
The Tarheels got very good minutes from their back up point guard Quentin Thomas. Thomas looks so much better than he did early in his career. He had five assists and no turnovers against Iona. More importantly he gave UNC reliable minutes and proved he could run the team with Ty Lawson, the starter on the bench. He does an excellent job of finding the open man especially in the fast break. The lone senior on the roster is holding his won after a tough time in his first couple of seasons.
Next up for North Carolina, a matchup with South Carolina St. The Heels will try to continue their success in the Las Vegas Invitational. If things go as they should, they could have a possible matchup with top ten powerhouse Louisville. That would come on November 24th. If the heels get performances from Hansbrough and Green they certainly should be there.
