Almost every family that celebrates Christmas has at least one special tradition that is practiced year after year. Sometimes that tradition is a ritual that is enjoyed by all family members, but sometimes... well, we just find ourselves doing something out of habit in the name of tradition!

Perhaps it is time to assess your family Christmas traditions and determine whether they are something that your family cares to continue, or if perhaps they can be tweaked or replaced altogether with a new Christmas tradition that would be even more enjoyable to your family members.

Here are some Christmas tradition ideas that your family may care to consider:

Looking at Christmas lights and decorations - Many families probably practice this enjoyable tradition, but it is worth the reminder to pencil in an evening on the calendar to drive your family around the community to enjoy the Christmas décor. Prepare some popcorn and hot chocolate, and pop a Christmas CD in the stereo to get the full sense of Christmas joy.

Letting the kids open one special gift on Christmas Eve - My sister and I could always expect a new nightgown or pajamas, and we enjoyed the tradition of opening that one gift on Christmas Eve night and wearing our new piece with joy. This was a simple but exciting Christmas tradition for our family.

Exchanging stockings with another Mom - It seems like we moms always get ripped off when it comes to stocking stuffers! We put so much care into filling the kiddos (and even Dad's!) stockings with candy and surprises, while our own stays pretty empty. Consider swapping stockings with a sister or other mama friend and enjoy a few surprises yourself on Christmas morning.

Doing good deeds for others - Many of us find the need to redirect the attention of our children to the needs of others rather than the desires of themselves during the Christmas season. Make it a family tradition to be of service to others: go caroling in the nursing homes, volunteer in a soup kitchen, or perform some secret act of charity to benefit another.
