No matter who gives you obvious hints on how to build stairs, like placing a measuring tape on the floor beside you, or asking how big the stairs will be when you're finished, don't measure.
Simply eyeball it, I mean, how wrong can you possibly go? Sure, you might end up wasting space. Yes, your concerned guests might wonder if you hired a drunk teenager to build those stairs. But your stairs will have character!
Pre cut everything! Don't worry about cutting the pieces to fit each space. Just get that stuff out of the way and cut it first. Yes, things may not line up correctly and you could end up wasting dozens of pieces of wood.
If your lucky stars happen to be in alignment that day, all those pieces just might fit together seamlessly to create the perfect stairs. Or maybe not. Hey, what matters is you're having a ball either way.
Above all, avoid using quality wood of any kind. In fact, use whatever wood you might find lying on the side of the road, or found in old shacks in the woods.
This method will save you cash. And who cares if the stairs only last a couple of months or so. It's not like you wasted money on those things anyway, right?
