Jekyll: Take Advantage of the Writers Strike to Learn Just How Brilliant Television Can Really Be

Another British Miniseries that Emphasizes the Impotent Creative Capacities of American Network Executives

Fresh from viewing the British political miniseries The State Within that should make everyone associated with American television humiliated, I now have yet another example of how Americans are being screwed over by the witless executives in charge of TV. While we are subjected to a
constant flow of imbeciles running around on reality shows as if they possessed some kind of talent, and watch in jaw-dropping astonishment as shows like Two and a Half Men rule the top of the ratings, the British get Jekyll, a masterful miniseries that challenges the intellect and forces the viewer to actually stop text-messaging, surfing the internet, watching dishes and even making love in order to pay attention. Well, maybe not making love. If you do that right, it remains possible to multitask.

Thanks for the info on that, Tim. I'll check BBCA's website and see if they're airing it anytime soon. I haven't taken advantage of Netflix yet--but I should for reasons you've already written about. Waiting for British shows here, though, is akin to waiting for it sent by bottle across the Atlantic...

It is available on Netflix, and I think it has been on BBCA, but don't quote me on that.

When producers find out that a lot of "amateur" writers would be willing to write screenplays and teleplays for cookies...things really could change. ;) Well, you know from all my articles that I frequently cite the British as being the best at everything in the writing arts. The only thing they missed the boat on was the culinary arts (perhaps arguable if the French stole all their prior recipes). They still manage to mine gold in plots you'd think would be staler than old cheese by now. All you have to do is watch a British mystery on PBS, and you'll see that they always find creative angles in a tired formula. Seldom, though, do you see something overly cerebral on any TV in any country today. So you have me intrigued on "Jekyll" that I've admittedly never heard of yet. Is it being shown on BBC America yet? If we go by their usual schedule, we'll be lucky to see it on BBC America before we die...or when American writers finally settle with TV producers.

Tim, you just gave me a great idea for a reality show- turning the writing of the show over to amateurs. It couldn't be worse than the fare offered on tv now.
