For many elderly adults, the issues of daily nutrition and meal support can be challenging. While many within the elderly population are supporting by adult children, there are those aging adults who continue to live independently. From the reliance upon food shelters to the social services that provide home meal delivery service, many within the elderly population would simply not find the nutrition they need without the service of others.

Because, with aging, there is a functional limitation and a degree of disability and lost mobility, many older adults rely upon neighbors, church members and family to perform their daily meal activities. Such activities of daily meal planning may include preparation of the actual meal, arranging for meal delivery service or simply performing the grocery shopping for the senior adult.

If you are caring for an aging parent, it is important to understand the degree to which your parent embraces independence and freedom. While there are some key disability and mobility issues that must be contended with, many senior adults enjoy doing their own grocery shopping. While it may be more efficient and effective to simply do the grocery shopping yourself, or to hire someone to do it, you may find that your parent will insist upon performing this one task themselves.

Grocery shopping for many active and busy adults is a task we often do not enjoy doing. However, for the elderly population, grocery shopping is a way in which to engage in a social activity, retain some sense of independence and provide for themselves a sense of food security. By supporting your loved one in their effort to continue this one task independently, you will be supporting not only their nutritional health but also their emotional health.
