Black Friday is almost here. Known as the biggest and busiest shopping day of the year, it starts as early as 4 AM the day after Thanksgiving and begins the traditional Christmas shopping spree nationwide. Thought to have started back in the 70's, it was so named for being the one day that retailers were in the 'black' - making a profit.

Tradition can include lining up hours before stores unlock their doors for shoppers waiting for a bargain. In Coeur d'Alene, with some of the biggest lines in town, with shoppers running the aisles as soon as management lets in the crowd is Target

Shopko, also an early opener, often offers free gifts to the first several customers. Electronics are a big draw to these bigger retailers, as well as toys, which can boast big discounts.

This year, our city by the lake obtained two new mega stores and men will no doubt be floating on Cloud 9 through the new Cabela's in Post Falls, while the women are strolling the aisles at Kohl's. From fishing gear to Fiesta ware, the sales will be sure to please both genders. However, while shopping the 'cool museum', don't forget the tried and true retailers that have been here faithfully for their customers and check out the hot deals at Black Sheep, the outdoorsman's original shopping paradise in Coeur d'Alene.

Silver Lake may be a good stop for bagging several gifts for young and old alike. While the mall in north Coeur d'Alene offers protection from nature's often cold winter weather, Sherman Avenue shops will prepare you for the Thanksgiving festivities that evening as you brave the season's climate conditions.

Make a gift at Summer's Glass, enjoy lunch at Hudson's Burgers, find the perfect ornament at the Christmas Shop, outfit your favorite sports fan at The Sport's Cellar or if you didn't dress warm enough for the day's outing, stop by Becky's Pendleton Shop and find a wool cover up.

Don't forget to save enough energy for the Festival of Trees and the fireworks right after the parade, which officially kicks off the town's Christmas season.
