For a little over a year I have been a freelance writer. If somebody were to ask me how I like being a freelance writer I would tell them I enjoy it but there are definitely some negatives. The main negative for me is simply sitting at my computer for 8 hours a day. Anybody who works at an office knows that sometimes you have some kind of busy work to do and it's very boring and you're tempted to surf the net or play solitaire to pass the time.
Someone who works from their own home has it even tougher than that. Not only is there the temptation to surf the internet or play a game on the computer but I often have the temptation of playing by Xbox, watching television or sometimes going to the kitchen and getting a snack several times a day. There are many distractions when working at home.
How do you avoid these distractions? The answer for me was buying a laptop.
With a laptop I can now go somewhere else other than my room to type. Instead of working in my bedroom with my Xbox and television enticing me I can go into the living room where the only remote form of entertainment is the piano. Since I only know how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb and the theme from the old Batman television show the piano rarely tempts me.
Sometimes it is also nice to go outside with your lap top. Writing while the sun is shining down on you and the birds are chirping and there is a nice breeze hitting your face can be really relaxing.
It's also nice sometimes to take the laptop on a trip to the library. There are other people working diligently and whatever projects or papers they have to do so it is sort of like working in an office environment and if research needs to be done for the article than what better place to get information then the library? The library is also a good place to get ideas for articles. Just peruse the books until you see a topic that interests you.
