Coalition Forces Capture 27 in Connection with Al Qaeda
As reported by Multi National Forces-Iraq, 27 individuals were captured by Coalition forces during missions seeking out al Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq.
Three wanted suspects were detained during missions in Baghdad. The mission goal was to find foreign terrorist and weapons organizers. Information let Coalitions forces to believe that members of al Qaeda in Iraq were trying to set up a terrorist network in Baghdad that would include foreign terrorists. Four other individuals were also detained by Coalition forces during the mission without any struggle.
A wanted terrorist thought to be a leader of al Qaeda in Iraq was detained in Bayji during a mission. He is connected with foreign terrorist organizers. One other individual was captured by Coalition forces during the mission.
In Mosul, forces captured seven terrorist suspects during a mission seeking out foreign terrorist organizers. They were captured without any resistance.
Coalition forces organized several operations in and around Samarra and Baghdad that resulted in one wanted terrorist and ten others detained. The mission goals were to seek out al Qaeda in Iraq's media network. Two sets of homemade body armor vests and armor plates were found by Coalition forces during the missions. They were destroyed to keep terrorists from using it in the future.
"Iraqi and Coalition operations are diminishing al-Qaeda's ability to attack the Iraqi people," said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. "More Iraqi citizens are coming forward and helping us find terrorist networks; foreign terrorists are not welcome in a free Iraq."
In other operations in Iraq, the Iraqi Security Forces and Multi National Division North Soldiers worked together in an operation called Iron Hammer. The mission goal was to break up al Qaeda in four provinces in northern Iraq. So far the operations have lasted two weeks and have included four Iraqi Army divisions and three U.S. brigade combat teams.
