Indianapolis, the Crossroads of America is located in the heart of the Midwest. Once a sleepy little town, there is now much to do here. Know for the Indianapolis 500, the track now hosts a variety of auto sports. The two largest single days sporting events in the world are hosted here, as is the largest drag racing event in the world. Detroit may be call the Motor City but Indianapolis give Detroit a run for its money with the Indianapolis 500, Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the United States Grand Prix and the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Indianapolis is known as the Amateur Sports Capital of the US. While many organizations call Indianapolis home, it is home to the following national sporting headquarters: American College of Sports Medicine, Black Coaches Association, Indy Racing League, National Association of Governors' Councils on Physical Fitness & Sports, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Institute for Fitness & Sport (NIFS), National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSHSA), USA Gymnastics Federation, USA Track & Field, US Diving, Inc., US Rowing Association and US Synchronized Swimming.
If visiting Indianapolis you may want to visit the world's largest Children's Museum, the NCAA Hall of Fame, or the Eiteljorg Museum.
According to the Indianapolis Visitor and Conference Center, Indy is the thirteenth largest city in the United States and the twenty-ninth largest U.S. metro areas. While still holding true to it's down home roots, Indianapolis has proven it's ability to host large events without a hitch. Many venues are in walking distance of the downtown area with shopping, dining and evening activities.
With revitalization in the older sections of downtown and a thriving arts community, it is a wonder why Indianapolis finds itself in the top 50 most Dangerous Cities according to CQ Press. Finding its position at number 45.
