First Woman, First Black, First Latino, or First Honest President?

Most Dishonest Politicians Have a Better Chance of Winning

The phrase honest politician has become an oxymoron. We should not be impressed by the prospect of having the first woman, first black or first Latino president. What would be far more radical would be to have the first honest president, if not ever, certainly in a very long time.

Presidents in recent memory have been excellent liars, contributing mightily to our culture of dishonesty. Bill Clinton had the audacity to look right into the TV camera and blatantly lie to the American public. George W. Bush has probably set a record for
official lying, though it might take many decades to fully document them. Carl M. Cannon saw the bigger truth: "posterity will judge [George W. Bush] not so much by whether he told the truth but whether he recognized what the truth actually was."

Things have gotten so bad that hardly anyone can even imagine an honest president. But if we don't expect an honest president, how can we expect to trust government?

Don Nash made these insightful observations, "If America was ever faced with a politician who spoke truth to the people, no-one would know what to make of the oddity. This politician could probably not get elected to office. Sadly, Americans can't handle the truth. ...Lies, then, are the consequential destruction of American democracy. Little by very little, the lies and lying politicians have chipped away at America's Constitution and the American form of government."

Rampant lying by politicians is a major reason why so many Americans have stopped paying attention to politics, stopped hoping for political reforms, and stopped voting

Lying politicians probably tell themselves that the public cannot take the truth. Many convince themselves (lie to themselves) that lies of omission are not really serious like lies of commission.

Just how bad things have become is shown by the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the state of Washington that lying politiciansare protected by the 1st Amendment. They are free to lie as much as they can get away with. Free speech apparently is a green light for lying, even though it leads to rotten, dishonest government.

The most amazing thing to me is how an impeached President based on lying to the Supreme Court under oath, etc, could even be considered as First Man in the White House. Hillary should be disqualified from running based on that. I can hardly blame politicians for their lies and corruption when citizens keep voting for the same people over and over again. I am voting Democrat this year, exception if Hillary gets the bid because I am sick and tired of the rigid religious Republican right that does not believe in democracy or freedom for all citizens, just themselves and their rich friends and fanatic televangelists. The Constitution was written to protect against that form of government.

Rather like making video taping police interrogations the law, he wants to do likewise in the White House. Unlike Hillary who feels the government needs to lie to the citizens for national security reasons. Can not let our enemy know what we are up to. But if you lie to people about one thing, how do we know you tell the truth about anything. I like Kucinich, but he is not electable in this conservative US of A. I do not know about his honesty level. There are AC CPs that do not believe in UFO's so he lacks credibility in some eyes. Do not know McCain, ruled him out early on for a reason I do not remember. The internet is a grand tool. I now know about Prescott Bush's involvement with Hitler and banking; about GWHB's involvement with the Hinkley family; Neil Bush's involvement with Dubai; The Bush clans involvement with Halliburton, Kellogg, Root & Brown and Viet Nam war profits.

I did not study Richardson because he was one of the few Democrats that voted no to declaring English the National Language. He appears to be honest to me, but I ruled him out. I did not move to a Spanish speaking country and I rather resent forcing the government to declare a National Language, because La Raza's want it declared Spanish. My father did not try to force the country to change to suit him, he changed to fit in with the country. I like Ron Paul, except he is a bit out of touch with today's USA and he is a Libertarian. They do not support 1/2 the populations right to make choices about their own life. If it were between him and Hillary, I would vote for him, tho'. Talk about dishonest. Interesting that I find Obama honest and it is her telling people that he is not that convinces people. I did a lot of research into his background and I have found him trustworthy. I especially like his transparent government ideas.

I have to agree with you on this one, Joel. I do hope you will reconsider and show up at the polls. ;)

Dennis Kucinich for President, the last honest politician(probably not the last, but definitely one of a rare breed). Dennis4president.com

You've got it right Joel. America, a nation of ignorant idiots being led around by the nose by a bunch of lying assholes! Too bad an honest man like Dr. Ron Paul hardly stands a chance because the truth isn't very often as acceptable as a lie to the ignorant idiots.

Bravo! For far too long the elections have been about choosing between the lessor of two or more evils. Good job!

You're right, but that is politics. Maybe you can start a petition where people promise not to vote. If enough keep their promise, I think I can select the best President for America.

Well done Joel . . . here's a lyric for you! O beautiful, for spacious skies But now those skies are threatening They're beating plowshares into swords For this tired old man that we elected king Armchair warriors often fail And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales The lawyers clean up all details Since daddy had to lie . . . I think Bill Richardson would be a wonderful president. Just look at all he has done for New Mexico. Let's vote in the first Latino and an honest candidate all in one!
