In some families their candied yams recipe is a more important part of a holiday meal than the main course of turkey or honey ham. Candied yams are like dessert, which makes them a popular Thanksgiving dinner side dish on this Autumn holiday. This is an easy candied yams recipe which is sure to please holiday dinner guests.

Preparation for Candied Yams Recipe

First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. The oven may already be pre-heated, from cooking a turkey or ham. These potatoes take 25 minutes to cook, and can be cooked in the time it takes the cooked turkey to set (so the juices can run through the bird) and to carve the turkey.

Candied Yams Recipe Serving Size

This easy Thanksgiving Day side dish recipe will serve 12 people. That sounds like a lot, but this dish goes fast and it can easily be reheated and still retain its flavor and holiday charm.

Ingredients for Candied Yams Recipe

To make this easy holiday meal side dish, you could use real yams or sweet potatoes, but if you are crunched for time you can used canned yams or canned sweet potatoes.

two cans of sweet potatoes
one cup of packed brown sugar
half a teaspoon of cinnamon
half a cup of butter
three cups of mini marshmallows

Making the Candied Yams Recipe

Spray the bottom of a large casserole dish with non-stick spray.

Open the cans of sweet potatoes spread the potatoes on the bottom of the dish.

TIP: Drain the water from the sweet potatoes before adding the to the baking dish.

Make sure the potatoes are spread out with even thickness, like you are making a cake or brownies.

Next, cut the butter into small cubes or squares. Place the butter across the top of the potatoes.

Sprinkle the cinnamon evenly over the butter.

Next, sprinkle the entire pan with the brown sugar.

Place the marshmallows on top of the brown sugar.

Cover the pan with aluminum foil. Bake for approximately 25 minutes.

Tip: Cover a large piece of aluminum foil with non-stick spray, to keep the melted marshmallow from sticking to the foil.

Options for the Candied Yams Recipe

For a different texture and a citrus boost, add one small can of crushed pineapple.

We prepare the yams recipe that my mom made. It is so yummy and we never tire of having it as part of our holiday meal.

Great recipe! Just like mine, but I use the big marshmallows. Never tried adding pineapple. Sounds yummy!

We don't do Thanksgiving in Sweden, but I still do make a big ol' turkey dinner for friends and relatives this time of year... did it last week ;) My recipe for the yams is pretty much the same and that is one of their favorites.
