As reported by the U.S. Navy, while on patrol as part of the Coalition Force Military contingency operating in and around the country of Iraq, the German frigate FGS Augsburg assisted the dhow Nasrat which was sailing under the Iranian flag. The Nasrat issued a distress signal while in international waters just off the coast of Yemen.

The dhow Nasrat, a fishing vessel, apparently experienced engine trouble and was unable to return to port under its own power. The ship had been unable to maneuver for over 10 days during which time the crew, which consisted of Iranians and Pakistanis, ran out of food and water. Once the Augsburg located and approached the Nasrat, a team boarded the fishing vessel to lend mechanical help and evaluation, medical aid, and food and water.

Attempts to repair the damaged engines of the Nasrat were unsuccessful and the Augsburg set sail for Al Mukallah, a Yemen port, with the crippled fishing vessel in tow. The Yemen Coast Guard also participated in the recovery efforts.

The assistance of the disabled Iranian vessel continues a long standing tradition associated with Coalition forces. Assistance is typically extended to any vessels issuing a distress call. Food and water, medical assistance, vessel mechanical repairs, and search and rescue efforts are provided regardless of nationality. Coalition forces make available these services under the guidelines of international maritime rules in an effort to aid in the continuation of safe fishing and shipping activities.

In other news, the USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Denver, and USS Rushmore all returned to their home ports upon the completion of their designated seven month tours of duty. All three vessels were part of the international Coalition Force currently engaged in the international war on terror.
