Kansas Football Deserves More Credit

In the latest college football polls Kansas has moved up to #2 in the nation and is on course to face LSU in the National Championship game. The rise of Kansas is a surprise to many, so much so that some may not think they will win their last two games against Missouri and Oklahoma.

Even though the Kansas Jayhawks are getting attention I'm not sure they are getting enough attention. Kansas reaching #2 in the nation and being the only BCS School with an undefeated record seems to be a good story but not many people have treated like a huge story.

The truth is Kansas reaching #2 in the college football polls should be a huge story because Kansas has been a pretty irrelevant college football program for many years. Maybe the success of their basketball team has made us forget that on the football side of things the Kansas Jayhawks are pretty lousy.

Earlier this year one of the really huge stories of the college football season came when the South Florida Bulls rose all the way to #2 in the college football polls. When South Florida was #2 in the nation it was the top story in college football and a much bigger deal than Kansas being #2 in the nation but I'm not sure it should be.

I realize that South Florida is pretty new to Division I football so their rise was something we weren't used to but South Florida has actually been a much better football program than Kansas in recent years.

Since becoming a division I program South Florida has a 43 - 25 record. Out of all the division I college football programs South Florida's overall record over the past ten years is actually 29^th out of all of them.

The Kansas Jayhawks on the other hand are a lot worse than that. Kansas only has a 47 - 69 record over the last ten years which ranks them 90^th among all college football programs. Even if Kansas plays in a tougher conference it's not a big enough difference that the team with the 29^th best record reaching #2 should be a bigger story than the team with the 90^th best record reaching #2.
