The player who won the Heisman Trophy, Reggie Bush, was the front-runner to be the 1st pick of the draft. That was until the night before the draft.
That night, the Houston Texans, who owned the first pick of the draft, announced that they had reached an agreement with Defensive End Mario Williams and that Williams would be their first pick.
That decision had a shocking effect throughout the league. Everyone had just assumed that Reggie Bush was the consensus overall pick, and that he would surely be the first pick of the draft. Teams went into a frenzy trying to make a trade with the team that owned the #2 pick in order to get Reggie Bush. But that team, the New Orleans Saints, held their ground and selected Bush for themselves. Forever, Bush and Williams would now be connected to one of the most surprising and controversial moves in NFL Draft history.
In the two players' first game against each other, the Houston Texans prevailed over the New Orleans Saints 23-10. The game was deemed as the first game in determining if the Texans made the right pick by passing on the Heisman Trophy winner for the defensive end. And at least for this game, Mario Williams came out as the better pick.
Reggie Bush only rushed fro 34 yards on 15 carries, giving him a 2.3 yards/carry average. He did put in 12 catches for 70 yards, but he only 5.8 yards/reception, which is around what Adrian Peterson averages per rush. Bush had no scores, and coughed up the ball two times.
Mario Williams on the other hand, he had six total tackles and converged on Saints QB Drew Brees for a sack at a pivotal point in the game. He also forced a fumble and continued to put constant pressure on the Saints quarterback all game.
