On Oprah's Favorite Things show, this collection was listed as one of her top hits for the Christmas season. It is truly a stunner of a collection from United Artists.More information and the complete list of films can be seen here: www.unitedartists90.com/
It is safe to say that there has never been a collection anything like this one, featuring 110 discs and over 90 films. United Artists was formed in 1919 by Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. The studio has had over 80 Academy Award Winning classics, many of which are featured in this new boxed set.
Tied into the release of this set is a tie-in with the new film, Lions for Lambs as well as a $20 million dollar marketing campaign. Hopefully, future filmmakers will be inspired to go on and launch a new set of equally creative and visionary movies, one stated mission of the release of this collection according to information at Yahoo's show business release here: biz.yahoo.com/bw/071029/20071029006108.html
Included in the campaign to accompany this set will be the first ever traveling United Artists film festival. There will also be a connection and support for the American Film Institute (AFI) as well as assistance in the valuable work they do to preserve and restore films that would otherwise be lost to history.
Highlights of the boxed set:
Films from the 1940s and 50s include Moby Dick, Twelve Angry Men and the original Fugitive (later made into a movie with Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford).
Then there are classics from the 1960s such as Westside Story, Manchurian Candidate and Dr No.
Moving into the 1970s heralds such films as Carrie, Rocky and Annie Hall and the 80s brings in War Games and Raging Bull.
Topping off the list are The Birdcage and Hotel Rwanda.
Eight Academy Award winners: Marty, The Apartment, In The Heat of the Night, Annie Hall, Rocky, Rain Man, Westside Story, Midnight Cowboy.
Bond films include On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye and Dr. No.
