Toenail fungus is a common problem that can be very embarrassing. Those with discolored, yellow, flaking toenails avoid wearing sandals with open toes, and they avoid going barefoot. Toenails infected with toenail fungus are unattractive and disgusting, and as if the embarrassment isn’t enough, toenail fungus can be quite painful. Toenails infected with toenail fungus sometimes loosen and fall off, and in the process, any bumps or other mishaps can cause a great deal of suffering.

Many people have toenail fungus, and prescription medications are available that effectively treat this common problem. Although prescription medications can be very effective, their effectiveness doesn’t come without a price. The possible side effects and warnings sound far worse than the pain and stigma of toenail fungus, so many people continue to endure the pain, suffering, and embarrassment.

Preparation for Application

There is an effective home remedy for curing toenail fungus, but before applying this product, it’s important to properly prepare the toenails so the home remedy can reach the infected tissues.

Clip affected toenails as short as possible, and file them down to reduce their thickness. Doing so makes it easier for the home remedy to reach the infection since the infection lies beneath the nails.

In addition to clipping and filing the nails, keep your toenails dry, and wear absorbent cotton socks. If possible, don’t wear shoes all day long. Allowing the feet to breathe will help keep them dry and a less desirable host for toenail fungus.

A Home Remedy That Really Works

Vapor rub is good for much more than clearing chest congestion and stuffy noses. Vapor rub is an effective home remedy that gets rid of toenail fungus. Simply apply vapor rub to infected toenails morning and night. Rub it in after bathing and drying the feet, and before retiring. Wear lightweight cotton socks to bed if you’re concerned about soiling the sheets.

continued......plastic wrap after slathering on the Vicks. It's only been 5 days--but I see progress. I'd almost bet money Vick's is going to work. I dramatically trimmed and filed away as much nail as possible. My toes feel tingly minty cool and are as hopeful as I am. Ask me in a month or two--but I'm pretty sure this is working.

I've had toe fungus for 8 plus years. Although only cosmetic--it's been a real pain in every way. Certain members of my family used to tease me until they got it. The other day a stranger stopped me in the shower and said..."hey, see you have a little problem...mine was worse...try vick's--it worked for me." I said, "are you sure????" Yes, "twice a day, nothing else, and my mom told me about Vick's." Of course now, if you are within 5 foot radius of me--you are going to wonder if I just ate a whole box of tic tacs with my mouth open. I use Vick's religiously, twice a day--with a little twist. I also cover the affected toes in plastic wrap after slathering on the Vick's. If you stopped me on the street at any time and politely asked, yes, I could instantly produce a sheet of plastic wrap and jar of Vick's. The best kind is the brand of plastic wrap which is somewhat adhesive, meant to seal over a plate, etc. I cut a 2"x4" inch strip and wrap it around the affected toes after

My husband had toenail fungus, and the Vicks really did work. A healthy new nail grew in place of the bad one. This really is worth trying, but you have to take the time to do this daily.

Well lo and behold, I just went to the Dr. to do another round of Lamisil, did on round last year, but the fungus is back. He said with lamisil it will ALWAYS come back, try Vicks Vapo Rub and use it every night, then wrap your toe with plastic wrap and you'll get rid of it forever. So no more drugs, just vapo rub for me........will see how it goes.

I went to a foot Dr yesterday, and she told me this remedy, so I just started, we'll see how long the process takes, I've had this for what seems like years, I kept buffing the nail as I was told this would make it grow out, but the nail was always half fungus half clean nail. It never would go away. The Dr. told me it was because the fungus prevented it from growing all the way out. I usually come Summer would just paint the rotten nail to hide it from view. I have never had one fall off, will the Vaporub make it fall off, I wonder ?

Interesting: it's the ingredient named "thymol" that does the work, something I use to treat books for a fungal infection. Keep applying it nightly until the whole fungus affected section has grown out completely or you risk having the fungus come back. And follow her tips on foot care because soggy skin is more suceptible to fungus infection than dry skin.
