NOAA Doctor, William Hogarth, to Serve as University of South Florida's College of Marine Science Interim Dean

According to a press release from the University of South Florida (USF), a major public university in Tampa, Florida, Dr. William T. Hogarth has been named USF's Interim Dean for the College of Marine Science. Dr. Hogarth, with a background which includes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has worked as an Assistant Administrator for Fisheries at the National Marine Fisheries Services since 2001; his presence at the National Marine Fisheries began in 1994. Dr. Hogarth has also served in various administrative positions and was a Regional Administrator for the Southwest and Southeast regions.

An Illustrious Background

"Dr. Hogarth has a deep understanding of the research environment as well as an impressive administrative record," Renu Khator, Provost and Senior Vice President at the University of South Florida, remarked in the press release. Dr. Hogarth attended the University of Richmond, where he obtained his Baccalaureate and Master's degrees, and North Carolina State Univeristy, where he was awarded his Ph.D.

Remarks Khator, "[Dr. Hogarth is] an accomplished researcher with a excellent reputation and a background that has focused on a wide range of environmental, scientific, and marine policy issues." Dr. Hogarth's USF appointment was endorsed by the university's faculty. The faculty is said in the news statement to have admired Dr. Hogarth's high standing, "high-level connections," management prowess, and charisma.

Hogarth a "Valuable Asset"

"I want to thank [USF] President [Judy] Genshaft, Provost Khator, and Provost-designate [Ralph] Wilcox for this opportunity," Dr. Hogarth said in the press release. "It is exciting to begin a new career after so many years in state and federal governments. I look forward to working with the faculty, student body, and local community leaders to develop a strategic plan for the future as we move the College of Marine Science to the next level of excellence," he continued.

College of Marine Science Professor Jose Torres says Dr. Hogarth is "certainly well-connected in Washington" and "potentially a very valuable asset."
