It only needs 20 seconds and less than a mile of open asphalt to get up to a speed of 200mph. In high speed comparisons, it regularly beats out the likes of the Lamborghini Murcielago, Mercedes SLR McLaren, and even the $1 million Bugatti Veyron. Hennessey Performance Engineering, an outside tuning house, has gained a reputation for producing insanely fast Dodge, Chysler, and Jeep (yes, Jeep) vehicles. The king of which is the Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper.

For some the 'standard' 600 horsepower Dodge Viper SRT10 isn't enough. If their quick enough and have deep pockets, 24 of those speed addicts per year can get their hands on this 1000 horsepower, 1000lb ft torque, street-legal monster. HPE touts this car as "The fastest and most powerful limited-edition street car in the world."

The numbers are there to support that claim. The rear-wheel-drive Venom 1000 TT goes from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0-100 mph in 5.8 seconds, 0-150 mph in 10.9 seconds, 0-200 mph in 19.6 sec. and has a top speed of 255mph. What is most incredible is that at $200,000, the Venom 1000 TT is priced far below other competitors to which it offers similar performance; most notably the all-wheel-drive Bugatti Veyron.

Dodge has also released the 2008 Viper SRT10 ACR at the LA Motor Show this year. The engine is essentially untouched; however there have been several modifications to the suspension, exterior, and interior. The following is an excerpt from the press release detailing suspension enhancements:

"The all-new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR is specifically modified and tuned for track performance. The ACR suspension includes coil-over racing dampers from KW Suspensions that are adjustable for damping and ride height. The shocks are two-way adjustable without removing the wheels - a timesaver on the track - and they include a large range for compression and rebound. The KW dampers and forks are machined from solid aluminum billet, feature spherical bearing mounts, and are optimized to minimize weight and maximize performance. The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR features a new front stabilizer bar for increased roll-stiffness."

Takeaways
  • from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds
  • from 0-200 mph in 19.6
  • Runs the 1/4 mile in 10.5 sec. @ 153 mph

Thanks for the comment. You've made a good point. I've only compared performance in this article. Nevertheless, my persoanl preference would lead me to pick the Venom TT over the Veyron for performance, and then buy a Maybach when I need some comfort. I'd still have half a million left over for other toys.

The Bugatti Veyron is an engineering masterpiece, and the Hennessey Venom isn't. The Bugatti is a car you can go shopping in and get over speed bumps with. It can be quiet, relaxed, and it's built to last for 20 years. The Venom is none of those things, it's a snarling, devilish beast like the normal Viper. That's all right-and-dandy, it's a fabulous machine because of it's savagery and brute force. Comparing it to a proper piece of engineering in terms of price, however, is unfair. The Veyron is a million dollars because it's a million dollars worth of car. The 200,000 dollars you pay for the Venom is JUST for the performance. The other 800,000 is blending that performance with every-day feasibility, design, and quality.
