It can be an uncomfortable situation for some people to stay home, especially when they have small children. Toddlers:

Toddlers are the most stressful kind of houseguest because they are always on the move and they love to get into everything. Here are some simple things that you can do as a host to make the parents and your home more enjoyable. Many hosts that are not parents themselves do not realize the stress that some parents undergo when visiting another person's home. It is hard to relax because you are always worried about what they can get into or what the can reach and break that might be expensive. Use these tips when dealing with a houseguest and their toddler.

-Remove all valuable and breakable objects from the toddler's reach in all areas that the toddler will be going.

-Purchase used or new baby gates to block access to any rooms that are off limits and make one available to block the guest room door. This is especially important if the guest room is upstairs.

-Either move all cleaning products up or use a baby lock to lock the cabinet that they are in.

-Purchase a few new or used toys and place them in a basket in the guest room. New toys will entertain they toddler and allow your houseguests to fell a little more comfortable.

-Always ask the parents beforehand if their toddler has a habitat of getting into one thing specifically such as light sockets, cleaning products, or climbing. This insight can allow you to concentrate on problem areas.

-Check for any night time routines that are done such as quiet time, night lights, or soft music. You may have to create a quiet environment or provide a CD player to assist your houseguest.

Children:

Children houseguests are easier to deal with in general than small children. However, unlike toddler, a child might need more room to run and play. Try using these tips to make everyone feel a little more comfortable.

We are childless, but have all kinds of neices and nephews over every day. I'm with Sophie; although my wife and I will move heaven and earth to make our guests comfortable, we sometimes have to educate some of our guests on manners; i.e.,WATCH YER KID! OUR HOUSE AIN'T A PLAYGROUND!

Excellent! I know firsthand that those with children can feel like their imposing. By using your advice here, a host can make that family feel much better about staying with them. It also shows the family that you care about their feelings. :-)

More great advice, Beth! I remember one occasion when a friend came round with her 2 toddlers. She allowed them to stand on the counter tops, open all the cupboards and start playing! She didn't ask if this was OK or if we minded. She just said her girls did this all the time at her house! I thought that was very rude. Sophie
