Sony has received good news from a recent report by J.D. Power and Associates. Their digital camcorders lead both the standard definition and the premium standard definition markets for camcorders. The standard definition category is for digital video cameras below $399, and the premium standard definition category is for digital video cameras retailing for $400 or above. This information was released in a recent press release from J.D. Power and Associates when they revealed the results of their 2007 Camcorder Usage and Satisfaction Study (SM).

The Sony DCR-DVD Series (1) was the topped ranked video camera in the standard definition category. This camera scored a 744 in the 1,000 point scale. The Sony DCR-DVD Series (1), allows users to burn their DVD directly from the camera itself. The second place digital video camera in the category was also a Sony product. This was the Sony DCR-HC Series, which scored 740 points in the standard definition category. Finishing third in the category was the Canon Elura Series which received 707 points.

Just like in the standard definition category, Sony claims the top two spots in the premium standard definition category according to the press release. In this category the Sony DCR-SR Series finished first with a score of 756. One of its key features is hard drive storage within the device itself. The Sony DCR-DVD Series finished second in the category with a score of 736.

The cameras in both categories were rated on three factors. The first factor was the camera's appearance and styling. The second factor was the overall operation of the digital video camera. The final factor was the performance and video quality produced by the video camera.
