Merle Haggard the legendary 70 year old country singer, the Okie from Muskogee, has endorsed Hillary Clinton to be our next President.

I first heard about this when I was driving to my house in Lindenhurst, IL. I turned on the car radio and started listening to the local public radio station.

I tuned in right in the middle of a live phone interview with the great singer/songwriter. The mind-blowing fact quickly established was that it was indeed true that Merle had come out and endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Not only that, he had written a song called Hillary.

If you have followed the life and career of Merle Haggard at all you know that his politics have changed dramatically over the years. Although he started out as a New Deal Democrat, his songs The Fightin' Side of Me and Okie from Muskogee were an open declaration of his change to conservative politics back in the '60s and 70s.

He did not like the folks protesting the Vietnam War and he made his feelings very clear in his songs. He was one of the leaders of the charge to conservatism back in those years.

Merle Haggard is known for his honesty and integrity and when his opinions have changed, he has never been shy about telling us about them, both in song and when he is given an opportunity to talk. You gotta respect the man for that!

He has been the living definition of authenticity for many years. Known as the poet of the working man, he is beloved by many for keepin' it real. So perhaps we should not be surprised when one of his current songs has the lyrics, "Let's get out of Iraq/And get back on track"

In an October interview in the Washington Post, he said:

"I predicted 15 years ago that Hillary would be president of the United States. Bill Clinton is still the number one diplomat and Democrat in the world, and we get him as a package deal. Anybody with the least bit of intelligence is going to say, "Maybe we need some diplomacy." It's more about him than it is about her."

Here are some of the lyrics to the song Hillary:

Interesting! Thanks!

Interesting. I think celebrities have just as much right to endorse whoever they wish. I just hope that people don't choose to vote for a person based on celebrity endorsements.

Thanks to everyone that has commented. Although I like several of the candidates, I just want to make it clear that just because I wrote this article I do not mean to imply any personal endorsement of Hillary. The only really outstanding candidate in this election that I have found is Ron Paul. I expect to make my reasons clear through other articles to be published.

Well, I have always loved the Hag (have even seen him in concert once), but I'm also wondering about him after this revelation. I'm just blown away by this - Merle, endorsing Hilary? Hopefully I'll wake up and this will all be a dream (including Hilary running for President, yikes).

fviola, I bet its Tammy Wynette who is rolling in her grave over this :) "I'm not sitting here, some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette"-Hillary Clinton, January 1992

Gotta love Merle...if this shows one thing, it's that anyone on the right with brain cells sees how they are attacking the foundations of America, and how morally bankrupt they really are...and how much better an alternative is offered on the left...It's also fun hearing the diehard righties whine...

Are you serious? Merle have you been abducted? I may have to remove all of your music from my I-Pod. Oklahoma must be in shock,or you are really just an old guy that cannot think anymore and is one step from assisted living? Come on, Barry Manalow I can understand since he is a middle aged woman anyway but not you Merle!

Stan,I enjoyed this & thanks for including the lyrics to Merle's lullabye. As I was reading this I was wondering about Merle's sanity-the inclusion of the lyrics left no doubt as to his mental health....

Billie Clinton is the number one Democrat in the world? Really? I thought he was a saxophone playing playboy but I may have missed something. Merle? Really? His song reads like a group of first graders put it together. "The country owes it to Hillary." "And Hillary owes it to Bill". You have got to be freaking kidding me! What is Hillary doing dragging out the 70's disco group for endorsements--Merle Haggard and Barbara Streisand! Surely there is Someone who was born after the 60's that can throw a good word her way.

Hard to believe! Can we really take a possible 8 years of waking up to her "fingernails on a chalkboard" voice? LOL! Well, maybe Bill WILL make a good First Lady. Good article! :)

It's the end of the world when one of the original badasses of country is coming out and endorsing Hillary. I hope Johnny is turning over in his grave.
