There is an orangutan loose in the tiny town of Glen St. Mary in Baker County, Florida! It seems one evening sometime in October a scream cut through the night like a dagger. When residents heard the loud screech, they went outside to find the source. Right out in their yard, up at the top of a pine tree, there it was, nesting in the needles, an orangutan. Or was it? It was dark and the pine tree was at least sixty feet tall. And let's not forget there is an overpopulation of squirrels in the area who also nest in trees. But the witnesses are sure that is what they saw, a full-grown orangutan, and we all know an orangutan is a lot larger than a squirrel. The neighbors closest to the tree were not only shocked to see such a foreign creature outside their home, but they were also frightened, not knowing what it might do. A call to animal control began a chain reaction of curiosity that still continues to spread. Animal control officers knew this type of creature was way out of their league, so they made a call to the "expert" in Lake City, Florida. A much larger town, but not even a small city.
The local animal control went to watch the event while the "expert" from Lake City drove the 50 miles to save the townspeople of Glen St. Mary from the possibility of an orangutan attack. Looking up into the dark, even the "expert" was sure he saw the wide-faced primate. His first thought was to shoot it with his tranquilizer gun, but he was afraid the creature may be seriously or fatally injured from the fall, so he did the next best thing. The "expert" went to the nearest store for a box of doughnuts. When he returned to the scene of the ape, he arranged the treats at the foot of the pine tree, moved everyone away from the area, and watched from a distance for the orangutan to satisfy his sweet tooth.
About a full hour later the "expert" informed the residents he was leaving, and for them to call when the animal begins to make his decent. Yes, the hero of the orangutan event was tired and headed back to Lake City to wait for the call. The locals sat in wait with phone in hand. They waited...and waited...then decided it was time to get some rest themselves, so off to bed they went.
